Pastor 09 14 2014 Photo Conte PhotographyThe Reverend Lois K. Van Orden begins an intentional interim ministry call to Zion on Sunday, November 8. She is called by the Lower Susquehanna Synod to serve Zion under a two year contract with the option to extend the call for another year if necessary. Pastor Van Orden graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Economics. After a “first career” in business management at the Department of Public Welfare (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) and Pennsylvania Blue Shield in Camp Hill (now Highmark), she pursued her church music interests at Lebanon Valley College in Annville where she received a certificate of Church Music. After years of supplying for churches as an organist, she accepted an invitation to serve as Director of Music at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, where she continued to serve during her first two years of seminary. Ordained ministry is a “second career” for Pastor Van Orden. Pastor Van Orden recently resigned her call at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dillsburg after serving the congregation for eight and a half years (plus), to accept the intentional interim call. Prior to St. Paul’s, she served for a brief time as Associate Pastor at St. James, Gettysburg. She graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in May 2005 and was ordained on June 10, 2005. A life-long Lutheran, Pastor Van Orden is a gifted musician and has shared her musical and liturgical gifts with various congregations. Pastor Van Orden enjoys and greatly values her family life. She has been married to Dean since 1980. Dean, recently retired, was employed for 37 years by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Quality. They have two young adult children, Philip and Elizabeth. Philip is a graduate of Susquehanna University with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. He is a Sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed in Vilseck, Germany. He deployed to Afghanistan in August 2013 and returned safely to Germany on Christmas Day. Prior to his European tour of duty, Philip was stationed at Camp Hovey, South Korea. The family celebrated his marriage to Sara Behring from Nürnberg, Germany, at a civil ceremony on March 15, 2013 in Lübeck, Germany. Elizabeth is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York with a Master’s Degree in Architecture. She is currently employed for a lighting design firm in Manhattan, New York City. Dean and Pastor Van Orden live in Carlisle with their four cats, Emma, Isabella (Izzy), Jack and Kitty.
